Employees from Sun International’s payroll department found an ingenious way to pay it forward to people less fortunate than them. The team decided that they would donate money owed to them for working overtime hours to a Pretoria-based non-profit organization which provides food, shelter and care to vulnerable people – including children and babies.

Making a Difference to People Less Fortunate

The hours, valued at R25,000, will be given to Project House of Hope, and represent two hours of overtime worked by the team over weekends as they get ready to change Sun International’s payroll system. While this is a lot of money earned after hard work, the workers decided as a team that they’d be happy to make a difference to the lives of people were significantly less fortunate than them.

The donation was made together with clothing and other equipment that the team had spent collecting for the Hope of Hope.

“We had already collected clothing for the organization, but felt they could use the money, especially for milk and nappies for the babies,” said the Sun International payroll manager, Constant Laubscher. “Thankfully, the company agreed, and we could make the donation. We are proud to work for a company like Sun International that supports communities and NPOs across the country, but we felt that individuals can also stand together to do good. Our department has an amazing culture. We love working together and we all share the same values.”

Sun International Praises Workers

Sun International, South Africa’s premier casino, betting and hospitality group, praised the employees of the payroll department for their “selflessness and commitment” to supporting the Project House of Hope.

“Their donation not only represents their hard work and dedication, but also reflects Sun International’s core values of positively impacting the communities where we operate,” noted the director of Human Resources at Sun International, Verna Robson.
